Learn More About Laser Acupuncture

Laser acupuncture is popularly practiced throughout Europe and Asia. It is also quickly gaining popularity in the United States of America.

History of laser acupuncture
By the 1960s, the scientists had knowledge about the indoor and outdoor usage of knowledge. Researchers wanted to know how this kind of light could change the world or healthcare. In the early stages of experiments, they understood that laser therapy minimized skin scarring, helped wounds to heal faster, and affected cellular metabolism.

In the 1970s the Russians and Americans started serious research. By the 1980s researchers started to get positive results and laser started to be recognized as an effective method to stimulate acupuncture points without the use of needles.

Photobiology is the study of the effects of light on living things. And laser acupuncture is an important field of study under photobiology.

Current developments
Most lasers used in acupuncture are known as low-level laser or cold laser as they don't produce heat. Studies have proved that low-level lasers can help regenerate cells, decrease [ain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, stimulate hair growth, and many more.

In 1991 in Novosibirsk, Russia, a study was done on acupuncture. Researchers found that light traveled under the skin to various acupuncture points in the body but not to the non-acupuncture meridians. This happens because the body contains a fiber optic network. The light enters an acupuncture point, travels through the meridian. This can be detected at other places along the meridian with a photon detector.

Recent studies have shown that laser acupuncture has physiological effects has similar effects like that of the brain both locally and also in the brain. Multiple published studies have shown positive effects of laser acupuncture for hiccups, bed wetting, weight loss, post-operative nausea and vomiting, pain control, stroke related paralysis, and other conditions.

Advantages of Using Laser

  • Completely painless.
  • Great way to attract patients who have needle phobia
  • Fast and easy
  • No risk of infection because the skin won't be broken
  • Is as effective as the needle acupuncture
  • Can treat points that otherwise would not be treated because the patient's age, sensitivity, or fear
Some practitioners are training patients to treat themselves during the interim between visits as keeping movement in the channels between treatments help chronic pain patients to heal faster. They send a diagram of recommended points and instruct them to obtain proper laser.

How to Perform Laser Acupuncture

Any point of the body can be treated with the laser other than the ones near the eyes. But deciding the correct points and the right type of laser to use is the hardest part.

Depending on the power and the type of laser you may use, you would have to treat for approximately 15-60 second per point. Points like the legs and torso may require deeper needling and longer treatment. Ears, hands, and feet require less treatment time.

Safety Considerations

Lasers used in acupuncture are Class IIIa lasers. That is why glasses are not required in many cases. These are said to be eye safe because the blink reflex Is fast enough to prevent any damage to the retina. But while using lasers with a higher power or Class IIIb, it is advised that both the practitioner and the patient use safety glasses.

Stay cautious and never stare directly at the beam or even the dot of the skin even while using the Class IIIa laser. It is a good idea to have the tip of the laser actually touching your skin to minimize light scatter or reflect to prevent the beam from damaging your eyes.

Lasers can stimulate cell growth and repair. Kindly ensure you use laser treatment where you don't want cell growth.

Equipment

Lasers may vary in price. It ranges from under $100 to over $10,000. It is a good practice to understand the equipment to get the best results. If you want to treat joints, inflammation, pain, or other conditions, each scenario requires different laser capabilities.
